Solar farms and opportunities for biodiversity and agriculture Sunday, June 30 · 2:30 – 4pm
Wight Community Energy is a locally based non-profit organisation whose members owns a 4MW ground mounted solar farm just outside Shalfleet.
Combatting climate change caused by the burning of fossil fuels is our greatest challenge. Harvesting the suns power with solar PV is key for the necessary decarbonisation of our power needs. Contrary to belief, solar farms provide sanctuaries for biodiversity, in complete contrast to the bleak monocultures of intensively farmed land. Additionally, the land under the panels can be used to support grazing animals or even crops, in a system known as agrivoltaics.
The UK’s ambition is to provide 25% of our power from the sun by 2050. This has the potential to not only generate clean power, but also provide new havens of biodiversity in our countryside.
